WiFi Calling made simple –
Access, usage and prices

Will I incur costs for WiFi Calling?

There are no additional costs for phone calls within Germany, as the minutes are billed according to the respective mobile phone tariff.

However, different prices may apply when calling abroad. Telephone calls abroad are calculated as if you were in Germany during the call.

Calling Germany from abroad: A telephone call to Germany via the hotel WLAN in Dubai, for example, is calculated as a telephone call from Germany to Germany.People calling abroad: When you answer a call abroad via WLAN, it is like a phone call being answered in Germany.Calling abroad: According to your tariff, we calculate this the same as a call from Germany abroad — for example, if you call a restaurant from a hotel in Dubai via WLAN.

Tip: For example, if you have booked a Smart World M+, then you use the included minute package. If you didn't book an option, this call would cost 15 cents per minute plus a one-time connection fee of 15 cents.

Can I also make emergency calls via WiFi Calling?

Emergency calls (e.g. 112) and location-based services (e.g. ADAC) are not made via WLAN telephony. In this case, the smartphone will automatically search for an available mobile network. Emergency calls are therefore still possible in principle, but are not initiated via WiFi calls.

Your smartphone always uses the best available mobile network for emergency calls — including the network of other providers, as the exact location cannot be transmitted securely when making WiFi calls. However, this is possible via mobile telephony — so emergency services can find you faster. Even in flight mode, emergency calls can usually be made when a mobile network is available.

Is my data from calls securely transmitted via WiFi Calling?

Yes. WLAN telephony uses encrypted connections that are just as secure as traditional mobile phone calls.

WiFi Calling does not work for me. What could be the reason for that?

Your device is not VoWiFi-enabled: Whether this option is available can be checked in the device settings. There is no access to the network: In order for you to be able to make calls via WLAN, access to any WLAN is required. Even a low bandwidth is enough to make a stable call. Access must be activated on the device. WiFi calling is not activated on the device: To make calls via WLAN, the feature must be activated in the device settings. If the service is active, a corresponding icon appears next to the network operator icon.

What happens if I start a call over Wi-Fi but leave the Wi-Fi area during the call?

The switch between WLAN (WiFi Calling) and mobile communications is usually automatic. If you start a call via WLAN and leave the WLAN area, the call is transferred to the LTE/4G mobile network without interruption.

Can I also use SMS or RCS with active WiFi Calling??

Yes, it is also possible to send and receive SMS and messages via RCS when WLAN telephony is activated and connected to the WLAN — even in flight mode, when there is only a WLAN connection.

Do I have to download additional apps or book options to use WiFi Calling??

It is not necessary to install certain apps or to book additional options or packs.

Because WiFi calling uses WiFi: How do I improve my WiFi at home?

  1. Router location: Set up the router centrally and freely, away from sources of interference such as microwaves or refrigerators.
  2. Frequency bands: Use the 5 GHz band for faster connections, if possible.
  3. WiFi channel: Check and change the channel to avoid interference from neighbors.
  4. LAN repeater: Use repeaters to extend the range.
