The Spanischer Elternverein in Essen has already existed for over 40 years – sufficient occasion to reflect on how it all began. The first Spanish ‘guest workers’ arrived in 1960, but it was not necessary to get organised in this way until they brought their children over from Spain and had to ensure that these children would have access to further education.
