In 1964, a group of Muslim students decided to found an Islamic association in the Querenburg district of Bochum. This association, later called UMSO-Bochum, was instrumental in the founding of the umbrella association UMSO – Union muslimischer Studentenorganisationen (Union of Muslim Student Organisations).
