Learning German with apps

Everyone wants a fun and easy way to learn German. With language apps for your smartphone, you can learn independently and at your own pace. A variety of apps offer a range of different options: audio makes learning easier and hearing the language is better than books alone for learning pronunciation. We would like to present a few apps for language learning:

Babbel

What’s special about Babbel is that you learn the correct pronunciation with speech recognition software. Listening and speaking exercises allow you to learn German step-by-step.

You can choose from six source languages, including English, French, Spanish and Italian. If your language is not there, you can try it with English.

Cost: The first course is free and further use costs €5 a month afterwards.

Practical: The repetition manager reminds you about your exercises.

Duolingo

Here you can learn vocabulary that is categorised according to topics and also to areas that interest you in particular. There are also speaking, writing and multiple choice exercises. You can even compete against other users in the exercises.

The app can be used in a total of 22 languages. You can learn German with Arabic, Spanish and Russian as the source language or perhaps use Duolingo in English.

Cost: The app is free.

Practical: Images illustrate words, helping you learn.

Busuu

 

This app is based on mutual support, with a community of native speakers who help each other to learn. You can look for a tandem partner to speak with and you can speak directly with other users. in the video-chat function.

The app allows you to choose from 12 languages, including Italian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Polish and Chinese, through which to learn German.

Cost: Busuu is available as both a free and a Premium version for around €5–€10 per month.

Practical: You can test your knowledge in a language quiz.

 

50 Sprachen

 

Numerous combinations: with 50Languages, you can learn many languages with different source languages in a variety of directions – for example, learn German with Arabic, Russian or Chinese as the source language. It includes free audio material so that you can also listen to the examples.

Cost: 30 lessons are free, 100 lessons are €9 or €2.70 for one language.

Practical: You can download the content and use it offline.

LingQ

 

What’s exciting about this app is that it includes numerous authentic listening texts. Learn about interesting subjects with podcasts, audio books and interviews. You can also chat with other users in the community.

LingQ is available in 17 languages. You can choose from French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese as source languages through which to learn German.

Cost: In addition to the free version, you can also choose Premium for approximately €9 or Premium Plus for approximately €35 per month.

Practical: The browser extension – here you can import content from the internet into your LingQ library to call up and read when using the app on the go.
