Use online portals to look for potential flats. There you can, for example, search by location, size and rent level. On Immowelt, Immobilienscout and WG-gesucht, you will find flats and rooms in shared accommodation.
When I came to Germany, I looked for flats almost exclusively on the Internet since it is fast and free
In flat sharing arrangements (WGs[S1] ), flat mates share the rent – which saves you money. Rooms in shared flats are also a lot more fun. Many of your flat mates are happy to give you tips about your new city or living in Germany. Would you prefer more peace and quiet? There are also small 1-room flats.

Flats in popular cities or city districts are often claimed fast. Use the contact information provided to call or write an e-mail.
Prepare a folder with an employment agreement, payslip and statement from the Schufa credit authority. An added bonus: a picture of yourself. Hand in the folder when you go to look at the flat or send it via e-mail afterwards.
Landlords tend to require a damage deposit – that is, a sum to cover any damages to the flat that might occur.
You could talk to a bank ahead of time about a so-called rent guarantee if you don’t have the funds for the damage deposit.
Online ads for shared flats often ask that you introduce yourself in person. Respond to them and tell them a bit about yourself. Why do you want to move? How will you pay for the flat – do you have a job or do you receive financial assistance?
When you go to view the flat – be punctual and courteous. Always ask ahead of time whether you should bring something along when you go to view the flat. Have a close look at everything and take notes after the meeting.
Good luck!
