Integration courses and German courses

Many migrants and refugees can attend an integration course, including German lessons. We explain who is eligible for a course and where you can find information about them.

Who is allowed to take part?

Immigrants who were granted residence prior to 2005

If you were granted residence in Germany before 1 January 2005, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) can offer you a place on an integration course if places are still available.

Immigrants who were granted residence after 2005

If you were granted your residence permit after 1 January 2005 and you do not yet speak German to a sufficiently high standard, you are obliged to take part in an integration course. If you already speak good German but still want to attend a course, you are eligible in certain cases.

Costs

You pay €1.95 for each hour of tuition on the integration course. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) covers the rest of the cost. A typical integration course is 700 hours long. The entire course will therefore cost you €1,365. In 600 hours, the language course covers content regarding many important topics from your day-to-day life, such as writing e-mails in German and filling out forms.

Important:

Important: If you receive unemployment benefit II (Arbeitslosengeld II) or social assistance (Sozialhilfe), you don’t need to pay. If you have major problems paying the contribution to costs due to financial or personal circumstances, you are also exempt from paying.
